SGEI Post Doctoral Fellowships
Any member of SGEI can nominate an eminent international expert in the field of GI Endoscopy with a distinguished career for the SGEI-VJ VAKIL Oration. Self-nominations are also welcome.
Why We Need This Urgently?
The approximate number of estimated seats available for training in India in following disciplines are as follows:
DM Gastroenterology (2023) – 253
DNB Gastroenterology (2023) – 320
DM Hepatology (2023) – 30
Thus, around 600 doctors are being trained annually in discipline of gastroenterology and hepatology. The curricula during this training period includes only basic endoscopic training because of extensive curriculum. Endoscopic training is the only a part of whole gastroenterology training.
These trainees require advanced endoscopic training in their early career. However, only a few institutions provide structured trainings in advanced endoscopy which is grossly insufficient for the large number of young gastroenterologists in need of further training.
Some centres are offering fellowships/observer-ship for a limited period with variable quality of teaching without quality control and no clear selection criteria for participants.
There is a lack of a central accreditation body in the field of GI endoscopy in the country and thus there is a need for SGEI to come up with a structured training program in accredited centres with adequate quality control.
